Chilaw Marians Cricket Club v Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club ? Premier Limited Over Tournament, 2012/13 (Group B) ? Match Update ? SL Navy SC claims 24-run win
A concentrated bowling performance, led by Chanaka Ruwansiri, saw the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club securing a 24-run win over the Chilaw Marians Cricket Club, in their Group B match during the ongoing Premier Limited Over Tournament, played at the Navy Ground in Welisara on December 30.
The match kicked off with the Navy SC winning the toss and choosing to bat first, but the Chilaw Marians CC?s Geeth Kumara (10-2-31-4) ensured that the opposition did not have it easy.
Opening batsman Dhanushka Gurusinghe made an almost immediate exit, sent packing by Malinga Surappulige on duck in the second over. However, Gayas Christopher (34) and Duleeka Thissakuttige (20) managed to put the innings on solid ground with a 47-run second wicket partnership.
Thissakuttige was bowled by Navin Kavikara in the 20th over, and Christopher followed suit in the 26th over, trapped lbw by Akila Jayasundera. However Chanaka Ruwansiri (33) and Yohan Kumara (39) both chipped in with sizeable contributions, while Supeshala Jayathilake top-scored for the team with an unbeaten 47.
Ruwansiri, Yohan Kumara, wicketkeeper skipper Ranil Rasanga (2), and Wimesh Wickramasinghe (1) were all disposed of by Geeth Kumara, and by the end of 50 overs, with 7 wickets down and Jayathilake and Sujeewa Liyanage (6*) at the crease, the Navy SC managed to post a middling final total of 194.
However, the team made up for it with their effective bowling performance, and Chanaka Ruwansiri (10-1-48-3) led the charge, while Yohan Kumara, Dulanjana Mendis, Sujeewa Liyanage, Jayathilake, and Wickramasinghe all chipped in with one wicket each.
Only five of the Chilaw Marians CC?s batsmen were able to progress beyond single digits, while the rest crumbled without putting up a fight. Coming in at number 6, Asela Jayasinghe top-scored for the team with 49, while Angelo Jayasinghe (39), skipper Sachith Pathirana (21), Geeth Kumara (14), and Umesh Karunaratne (12) were the only other notable contributors.
However, their efforts fell short and at the end of the day, within 43 overs, the team found themselves all out at 170, with the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club going on to claim victory by a margin of 24 runs.
