This soap bubble display comes in at number 8 in our best videos of 2012 countdown.
Flat-screen TV might seem overrated in comparison. Not only is this the world's thinnest screen - it can also display vivid images.
Most screens are opaque, but Yoichi Ochiai of the University of Tokyo, Japan, and colleagues can vary the transparency and reflectance of a soap film using ultrasonic sound waves. That means they can manipulate an image to make it look textured.
Using multiple screens can produce 3D holographic images. Due to the mixture of colloids in the film, it can be poked without popping, allowing for interaction.
The technology could be useful to artists, to give their work a more realistic feel. To find out more about the system, check out the original article, "World's thinnest screen created from soap bubble". If you're mad about bubbles, take a look at this soap bubble action flick and see how to paint like a master by exploiting physics.
