Olympics, elections and horsing around in odd 2012

LONDON (Reuters) - Presidential preening, golden Olympic gaffes, a royal windfall for a skydiving British queen on her diamond jubilee and the endless end of days marked the odd stories in 2012 which pranced across the news in Gangnam Style.

The year opened with a tale that flocks of magpies and bears had been spotted in mourning for North Korea's "Dear Leader", Kim Jong-il who died in December 2011 and was succeeded by his 20-something son Kim Jong-un.

Winter weather was so cold in Brussels that the Manneken-Pis, a bronze statue of a young boy urinating had to stop peeing because of sub-zero temperatures.

There was slightly warming news about Mondays in Germany, where crematoriums are struggling to adapt to an increasingly obese population and a boom in extra-large coffins.

"We burn particularly large coffins on Monday mornings when the ovens are cold," one crematorium said.

In March Polish media reported that kite surfer Jan Lisewski fought off repeated shark attacks and overcame thirst and exhaustion in a two-day battle of survival on the Red Sea with just his trusty knife as protection.

"I was stabbing them in the eyes, the nose and gills."

In other animal news, dairy cows across the world mourned the loss of "Jocko", the world's third most-potent breeding bull and Yvonne the German cow who evaded helicopter searches and dodged hunters landed a film deal: "Cow on the Run".

A Nepali man who was bitten by a cobra snake bit it back and killed the reptile after it attacked him in his rice paddy.

"I could have killed it with a stick but bit it with my teeth instead because I was angry," Mohamed Salmo Miya said.

A scathing resignation letter of a Goldman Sachs executive published in the New York Times inspired a sheaf of online spoofs, including Star Wars villain Darth Vader.

"The Empire today has become too much about shortcuts and not enough about remote strangulation. It just doesn't feel right to me anymore," Vader wrote in a published letter.

Austerity in Europe saw a once-thriving Greek sex industry become the latest victim of the country's debt crisis with Greeks spending less on erotic toys, pornography and lingerie.

But lust appeared to be in the rudest of health elsewhere.

Turkish emergency workers rescued an inflatable sex doll floating in the Black Sea and a German disc jockey vowed to press charges against a woman who locked him in her apartment and ravaged him for hours until he rang the police.

"She was sex mad and there was no way out of the flat," Dieter S. told police.

@ROYALFETUS

Britain's Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 60th year on the throne with Diamond Jubilee celebrations that saw a 1,000-ship rain-sodden flotilla sail down the River Thames, a massive party in front of Buckingham Palace, street parties across the country and a spoof incarnation of her majesty on Twitter.

"OK, fire up the Bentley. Let's rock," tweeted "Elizabeth Windsor", the comic online alter ego of the British monarch in a typical tweet from the spoof Twitter account @Queen_UK, a virtual monarch with a razor-sharp wit and a penchant for gin.

And Twitter positively exploded with spoof royal accounts later in the year when Elizabeth's grandson William and his wife Kate announced she was pregnant with a future monarch.

"I may not have bones yet, but I'm already more important than everyone reading this," was the tweet from @RoyalFetus.

Leadership and change was a theme which ran through a year in which socialist Francois Hollande defeated incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy and Mimi the clown to become French president, Vladimir Putin was elected Russian president again and U.S. President Barack Obama won re-election over Republican Mitt Romney.

Amid the tight election race, Obama met a gaffe-prone Romney for an exchange at a charity dinner ahead of the November poll, where America's first black president poked fun at Hollywood actor Clint Eastwood for lecturing an empty chair as if it were Obama during the Republican convention.

"Please take your seats," Obama told the crowd, "or else Clint Eastwood will yell at them."

"THE MODFATHER"

Sporting news was dominated by the London Olympics during the summer, where the opening ceremony included a vignette of Queen Elizabeth being escorted by James Bond before apparently skydiving into the Olympic stadium for her arrival.

"Good evening Mr. Bond," was her only line.

Olympic embarrassments were few, but they began early with organisers forced into apologies for displaying the South Korean flag on a video screen for North Korea's women's soccer team.

British cycling sensation Bradley "the Modfather" Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France, sparking a craze among fans for cutout cardboard sideburns modelled on his own and shouting "here Wiggo" as he raced to Olympic gold.

London's eccentric and loquacious Mayor Boris Johnson fell rather awkwardly silent when he got stuck dangling from a zip wire, waving two Union flags in drizzling rain.

Olympic chiefs urged youthful athletes to drink "sensibly".

But there was anything but restraint for Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who declared an early night at one point only to be photographed later with three members of the Swedish women's handball team. Early one Sunday morning Bolt also dazzled dancers at a London night club with a turn in the DJ booth.

"I am a legend," Bolt shouted out to a packed dancefloor from the decks with his arms raised in the air.

Towards the close of the year, tens of thousands of mystics, hippies and tourists celebrated in the shadow of ancient Maya pyramids in southeastern Mexico as the Earth survived a day billed by doomsday theorists as the end of the world.

"It's pure Hollywood," said Luis Mis Rodriguez, 45, a Maya selling obsidian figurines and souvenirs.

Finally, a chubby, rapping singer with slicked-back hair and a tacky suit became the latest musical sensation to burst upon the world from South Korea, via a YouTube music video that has been seen more than a billion times.

Decked out in a bow tie and suit jackets varying from pink to baby blue, as well as a towel for one sequence set in a sauna, Psy busts funky moves based on horse-riding in venues ranging from playgrounds to subways.

The video by Psy has been emulated by everyone from Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei to students at Britain's elite Eton College, gurning politicians, spotty teens and embarrassing dads worldwide.

"My goal in this music video was to look uncool until the end. I achieved it," Psy told Reuters.

New approach needed for children's mental health - Editorials - The ...

As a pediatric surgeon, I have spent my career giving children a chance to become healthy adults. When children are struck by serious medical conditions, their loved ones and doctors wrestle to understand what happened and how we can make it better. We use every advantage ? research, technology, our understanding of the human body ? to help children heal and secure a chance to live out their full potential.

Since becoming chief executive of Children?s National Medical Center, I have spent a great deal of time thinking about the larger issues that affect children?s health and their ability to reach their full potential in adulthood. For me, no issue is more critical than ensuring both healthy bodies and healthy minds.

Today, a staggering number of families struggle with a spectrum of conditions that affect the minds and brains of children and, if untreated, limit their ability to live happy, healthy lives. I find it devastating to watch families reach out for help for a child?s mental health issue when we have so few answers ? and resources ? to offer them.

We must change our thinking and our approach to ensuring mental health for children. I propose beginning with the following steps:

1. Accept that mental health is a children?s health issue. One in five children in the United States suffers medical condition that affects their mental health. These encompass a wide range of diagnoses, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and developmental disorders. Of the 15 million children affected by such conditions, only 20 percent ever receive treatment. By age 14, half of all lifetime diagnoses of mental illness will begin manifesting, and that 75 percent will show up by age 24.

2. Start screening early. As with obesity and diabetes, pediatricians know that, by detecting disease in childhood and intervening early, we can have a tremendous effect on the health of that person in adulthood. By contrast, there is an average delay of eight to 10 years between the onset of symptoms and treatment for children with mental health issues.

3. Treat the child, not the diagnosis. A diagnosis is, at best, a start, not an end. This is especially true in mental health. Children with the same diagnosis can exhibit profoundly different behaviors and need very different approaches. To be effective, the treatment of mental health in children must be individualized for the child and his or her family.

4. Address genetics. Many mental health conditions have a significant genetic predisposition. Technological breakthroughs the past few years have helped us understand, identify and intervene in many medical issues before they manifest symptoms.

5. Ensure access to medical care. Even with the most advanced approaches, real change cannot be achieved if the significant shortages in pediatric mental health providers are not addressed.

Now is the time for leadership. As we form task forces, forums and expert panels to respond to the shootings in Newtown, Conn., a discussion must take place about how we ensure the mental health and well-being of our children. If it does not, we will have failed both the children who perished Dec. 14 and those we are fortunate enough to still have in our care.

Kurt Newman is president and chief executive of Children?s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

At Israel school, anyone can learn to be a prophet

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) ? Instead of long beards and robes, they wear track suits and T-shirts. Their tablets are electronic, not hewn of stone, and they hold smartphones, not staffs. They may not look the part, but this ragtag group of Israelis is training to become the next generation of prophets.

For just 200 shekels, about $53, and in only 40 short classes, the Cain and Abel School for Prophets says it will certify anyone as a modern-day Jewish soothsayer.

The school, which launched classes this month, has baffled critics, many of whom have dismissed it as a blasphemy or a fraud.

On a religious level, Jewish tradition recognizes a few dozen prophets from the biblical era ? from the monumental figures of Abraham, Moses and Elijah to lesser known foretellers of doom and tormented questioners like Micah the Morashtite and Habakkuk. Tradition says no one can be a prophet ever since the Romans destroyed the second temple in Jerusalem in the year 70 and the era of prophecy can only be revived with the arrival of the Messiah and the temple's rebuilding. As one Talmudic phrase puts it, the only prophets now are children and fools.

But also, on a philosophical level, how do you learn divine inspiration in school? And can anyone learn?

"There is no way to teach prophecy," said Rachel Elior, a professor of Jewish thought at Jerusalem's Hebrew University. "It's like opening a school for becoming Einstein or Mozart."

That hasn't deterred the school's founder and sole teacher Shmuel Hapartzy, a follower of Chabad, a worldwide Orthodox Jewish outreach and worship movement that has come under fire because part of its membership crowned its late leader the Messiah. The Chabad movement in Israel has distanced itself from the school.

Anyone looking in the curriculum for "Parting the Sea 101" or "How to Predict the Future" or even "Principles of Proclaiming A Jeremiad" will be disappointed. Instead, students learn about the meaning of dreams, the classification of angels, the mysteries of the holy spirit. They learn how to discern a person's inner feelings from his or her external behavior and appearance.

Hapartzy can't guarantee his course will give his students a direct line to God. But, he says, the syllabus provides the essential tools to bring out the prophet in anyone.

"In the past there were prophets but even now, in our time, divinity is being revealed to everyone. We just need to open our eyes to it," said Hapartzy at his introductory course, which is held at a religious center in grungy south Tel Aviv, known more for its licentious street parties than piety.

And graduates do get a diploma.

There's little "profit" motive to the venture. Hapartzy said the token fee is to prove students' dedication and is donated to the religious center hosting the school. There's no application process ? anyone who wants to become a prophet can do so by just showing up for the course.

The school's inaugural class this month welcomed a mixed bag of 12 students ranging in age from 18 to 50. One man had scruffy stubble and wore a blue track suit. Another walked in with a guitar slung over his back. Others fiddled with their phones during the lecture or stepped out to smoke. Two had long beards and wore Jewish skullcaps.

Darya Popdinitz, who drove in from Jerusalem for the course, wore a pink hat with dangling pompons. She said her knowledge of biblical prophets was limited, but she was "curious" about the course.

"It's a real diverse mix of people," said Hapartzy.

The class itself is a modest study group. In the small room, the men sat in a circle around Hapartzy, with the women separately in a corner, following Orthodox Judaism's segregation of the sexes. Hapartzy lectures and hands out study material ? photocopied excerpts of holy books ? and a question period follows. The students' homework is to conduct good deeds and pray.

The 34-year-old Hapartzy has a varied background. A software engineer and Russian immigrant, with a long beard and dressed in black ultra-Orthodox garb, he said he was originally an atheist. He dabbled in "sciences, mysticism, Chinese philosophy, astrology, black magic and Christian cults" until, he said, he turned to Judaism.

He compiled the study materials from writings he said could be found in any religious library ? including, no surprise, the books of the biblical prophets. Since there's no traditional set course for becoming a prophet, Hapartzy used his own judgment for what subjects would be appropriate.

Like some in the Chabad movement, Hapartzy believes that the Messiah has already come and that the age of redemption is nigh, so it has possible to have prophets again. Claims by some that late leader Rabbi Menachem Schneerson was the Messiah split the Chabad movement and brought harsh criticism from other Jews.

Hapartzy said his school aims to prepare everyone for the new messianic era. The school is named after the sons of Adam and Eve ? Cain was the first murderer and Abel the first victim. The name represents a person's different spiritual poles, which the school aims to unite, Hapartzy said.

The desire to open up the realm of prophecy to anyone has raised hackles in some circles.

"It's completely crazy," said Menachem Brod, a Chabad spokesman. Facebook commenters have accused the school of "charlatanism and blasphemy."

Roie Greenvald, a 27-year-old tennis instructor attending the classes, also showed some skepticism. While he expressed interest in the spiritual development the course offers, one crucial detail stands in the way of his religious elevation.

"I'm not going to become a prophet," he said. "I don't think it pays very well."

2012 review: The year in life science

Read more: "2013 Smart Guide: 10 ideas that will shape the year"

The last 12 months have brought more insights into life's origins on Earth ? as well as a prediction about its ultimate fate. We've learned more about life's extremes thanks to biologists working in the driest desert, in the coldest continent ? and to a certain Hollywood director's trip into the deepest ocean trench on the planet.

It's also been a year that has taught us more about our species' origins, from the origin of art to the earliest evidence of medicine. Here are 10 more of our favourite stories of 2012.

Eats bark, fruit and leaves: diet of ancient human
Australopithecus sediba, a 2-million-year-old member of the human family, had a diet unlike other known hominins

Buried microbes exist at limit between life and death
Sediment 30 metres below the Pacific seafloor is so nutrient-poor that microbes barely fuel their cellular functions ? yet they may be thousands of years old

Prions point to a new style of evolution
A form of evolution that involves neither genetic nor epigenetic changes to the DNA has been seen in yeast

Was humanity born in the mother of all plagues?
Early in human evolution, our ancestors switched off two key genes. Doing so may have allowed us to fight off an epidemic of bacterial disease

First land plants plunged Earth into ice age
When the first simple mosses colonised the land, they unleashed vast ice sheets and triggered a mass extinction

Biological clock began ticking 2.5 billion years ago
An enzyme found in nearly all forms of life runs on a 24-hour clock and dates back to a pivotal moment in evolution

Chinese human fossils unlike any known species
The newly described Red Deer Cave people show an unusual mixture of modern and primitive features. Where did they come from?

Reptile grew feather-like structures before dinosaurs
Some 80 million years before the first feathered dinosaurs, Longisquama grew impressive structures using the same genes

DNA could have existed long before life itself
The idea that life began with RNA ? simpler than DNA ? looks less certain now that a DNA-like molecule has been made from basic compounds

Captured: the moment photosynthesis changed the world
For the first time, geologists have found evidence of how modern photosynthesis evolved 2.4 billion years ago

Bharti Infratel shares slump over 10 percent in debut

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Bharti Infratel, backed by billionaire Sunil Mittal, fell as much as 12.7 percent in its trading debut after raising about $760 million in India's biggest IPO in two years, weighed down by a cautious outlook for mobile tower operators.

The IPO, priced near the lower end of an indicative price range, struggled to find interest from retail investors and was supported mostly by foreign institutional investors. But analysts are betting on a revival in India's initial public offerings on the back of a recent stock market gains.

Bharti Infratel , a unit of top Indian mobile phone carrier Bharti Airtel Ltd and partly owned by KKR & Co Ltd, was trading at 197.20 rupees as of 0434 GMT on the National Stock Exchange.

That was down 10.3 percent from its IPO price of 220 rupees for funds and wealthy investors, who received the majority of the allocation. Bharti Infratel sold shares to retail investors at 210 rupees and to cornerstone investors at 230 rupees.

The IPO also gave funds including Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings and the private equity arm of Goldman Sachs Group Inc an opportunity to cash out of some of their early investments.

The listing comes amid an IPO revival in India after a tepid first half. Credit Analysis and Research Ltd and PC Jeweller Ltd also made their debut this week after raising around $100 million each.

The biggest initial share sale since Coal India Ltd raised $3.5 billion in 2010 pushed India's IPO volume to $1.28 billion this year, shy of last year's tally of $1.36 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data. But that is well short of the record set in 2007, when Indian corporates raised $8.65 billion through IPOs.

India's IPO volumes are expected to improve further on rising foreign capital inflows. Several high-profile deals including the listing of Bombay Stock Exchange and the potential IPO of Vodafone Group Plc's India unit are likely to hit as earlier as next year, bankers said.

The broader NSE index <.nsei> has surged about 28 percent this year, and is Asia's third best-performing market, according to Thomson Reuters data.

CAUTIOUS OUTLOOK

But weighing on the outlook for mobile tower operators, an Indian court this year revoked permits of several wireless carriers while demand growth for third and fourth-generation mobile data services slowed.

Shares of GTL Infrastructure Ltd , the only other mobile tower operator listed in India, have slumped 90 percent in the last two years, hit by debt repayment worries.

Bharti Infratel priced its IPO at lower valuations to overcome those concerns, attracting more than a dozen cornerstone investors including units of Morgan Stanley and Citigroup Inc.

The IPO valued Bharti Infratel at a 35 percent discount to peers in the United States and Indonesia with an enterprise value over EBITDA metric, or earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, said Nomura analysts.

But on a price-to-earnings basis, Bharti's valuation implied a 20 percent premium to global peers, Nomura said.

Bharti Infratel sold about 146 million shares, or more than three quarters of the shares on offer, while four of its private equity investors, including the arms of Temasek Holdings and Goldman Sachs, sold a total of 42 million shares.

Bharti Airtel, which owned 86 percent of the tower operator before the IPO, did not sell any shares in the process.

The IPO was mainly supported by foreign institutional investors, with the company receiving bids for less than a fifth of shares on offer for local retail investors.

Bharti Infratel has about 34,000 towers and owns 42 percent of Indus Towers, the world's largest tower operator. Along with Indus, Bharti Infratel has a 38 percent share of the Indian telecommunications tower market.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch , Barclays , Deutsche Bank , HSBC , JPMorgan , Standard Chartered , and UBS were the foreign banks underwriting the IPO, while Kotak Mahindra and Enam Securities were the domestic banks handling the share sale.

Delays litter long road to vehicle rearview rules

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? In the private hell of a mother's grief, the sounds come back to Judy Neiman. The SUV door slamming. The slight bump as she backed up in the bank parking lot. The emergency room doctor's sobs as he said her 9-year-old daughter Sydnee, who previously had survived four open heart surgeries, would not make it this time.

Her own cries of: How could I have missed seeing her?

The 53-year-old woman has sentenced herself to go on living in the awful stillness of her West Richland, Wash., home, where she makes a plea for what she wants since she can't have Sydnee back: More steps taken by the government and automakers to help prevent parents from accidentally killing their children, as she did a year ago this month.

"They have to do something, because I've read about it happening to other people. I read about it and I said, 'I would die if it happens to me,'" Neiman says. "Then it did happen to me."

There is, in fact, a law in place that calls for new manufacturing requirements to improve the visibility behind passenger vehicles to help prevent such fatal backing crashes, which the government estimates kill some 228 people every year ? 110 of them children age 10 and under ? and injures another 17,000.

Congress passed the measure with strong bipartisan backing, and Republican President George W. Bush signed it in 2008.

But almost five years later, the standards have yet to be mandated because of delays by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which faced a Feb. 28, 2011, deadline to issue the new guidelines for car manufacturers. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has pushed back that deadline three times ? promising in February that the rules would be issued by year's end.

With still no action, safety advocates and anguished parents such as Neiman are asking: What's taking so long to remedy a problem recognized by government regulators and automakers for decades now?

"In a way, it's a death sentence, and for no good reason," said former Public Citizen president Joan Claybrook, who once directed the federal agency responsible for developing the rules.

The proposed regulations call for expanding the field of view for cars, vans, SUVs and pickup trucks so that drivers can see directly behind their vehicles when in reverse ? requiring, in most cases, rearview cameras and video displays as standard equipment.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, charged with completing the new standards, declined requests to discuss the delays. Spokeswoman Karen Aldana said the agency would not comment while the rulemaking process was ongoing but was on track to meet LaHood's latest cutoff date. In a letter to lawmakers in February, LaHood said his agency needed more time for "research and data analysis" to "ensure that the final rule is appropriate and the underlying analysis is robust."

Others insist the issue is money, and reluctance to put any additional financial burdens on an industry crippled by the economic crisis. Development of the new safety standards came even as the Obama administration was pumping billions of dollars into the industry as part of its bailout package.

"They don't want to look at anything that will cost more money for the automobile industry," said Packy Campbell, a former Republican state lawmaker from New Hampshire who lobbied for the law.

NHTSA has estimated that making rear cameras standard on every car would add $58 to $88 to the price of vehicles already equipped with dashboard display screens and $159 to $203 for those without them.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a lobbying group that represents automakers, puts the total cost to the industry at about $2 billion a year. Last December, the group met with White House budget officials to propose a less expensive alternative: reserving cameras for vehicles with extra-large blind zones and outfitting the rest with curved, wide-angle exterior mirrors.

The alliance declined comment, but earlier this year the group's vice president, Gloria Bergquist, told The Associated Press that it urged the government to explore more options as a way to reduce the costs passed on to consumers.

"There are a variety of tools that could be used," she said, adding that automakers also were concerned that the cumulative effect of federal safety regulations is driving up the average price of a new car, now about $25,000.

Industry analysts also question whether cameras are needed on smaller, entry-level class cars with better rearview visibility.

"It may just be a couple hundred dollars, but it can grow pretty significantly if you are talking about ... an inexpensive car that was not originally conceived to have all these electronics and was only going to have a simple car stereo," said Roger Lanctot, an automotive technology specialist.

Before the delays, all new passenger vehicles were to carry cameras and video displays by September 2014. The industry has now asked for two more years after the final rules are published to reach full compliance.

Despite its resistance, the industry on its own has been installing rearview cameras, a feature first popularized two decades ago in Japan and standard on nearly 70 percent of new cars produced there this year. In the United States, 44 percent of 2012 models came with rear cameras standard, and 27 percent had them as options, according to the automotive research firm Edmunds.

Nine in 10 new cars had console screens available, according to market research firm iSuppli, which would put the price of adding a camera on the low end of the NHTSA's estimates.

These backing crashes are hardly a new phenomenon. Emergency room doctors, the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the NHTSA have produced dozens of papers on the problem since the 1980s.

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, started looking into the issue in the 1990s after noticing toddlers showing up in hospital databases of injured child pedestrians. They found that many of those children had been killed or hurt by vehicles backing out of home driveways.

In 1993, the NHTSA sponsored several studies that noted the disproportionate effect of backup accidents on child victims. One report explored sensors and cameras as possible solutions, noting the accidents "involve slow closing speeds and, thus, may be preventable." Still another 1993 report estimated that 100 to 200 pedestrians are killed each year from backing crashes, most of them children.

Three years later, Dee Norton, a reporter at The Seattle Times, petitioned the NHTSA to require improved mirrors on smaller commercial trucks and vans after his 3-year-old grandson was killed by a diaper delivery truck that backed over him.

The NHTSA started looking into technology as a solution, but in one proposal ? issued in November 2000 ? it noted that sensors, cameras and monitors were still expensive and promised to later reevaluate the feasibility of such emerging technologies.

Adding to the scrutiny were studies by Consumer Reports magazine, which started measuring "blind zones" to determine how far away a toddler-sized traffic cone had to be before a driver looking though the rear window could see it. The research found an overall trend of worsening rear visibility ? due in part to designs favoring small windows and high trunk lines, said Tom Mutchler, the magazine's automotive engineer.

"Cameras are basically the only technology that is going to let you see something right behind the bumper," he said.

With a growing body of research, better statistics and inaction by regulators, advocates such as Janette Fennell, president of a safety group called Kids and Cars, and Sally Greenberg, then with Consumers Union, turned to Congress for a solution.

In 2003, U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-New York, introduced the Cameron Gulbransen Kids and Cars Safety Act, named for a 2-year-old Long Island boy whose pediatrician father backed over him in their driveway. Five years later, it finally became law.

While no one doubts that cameras could help reduce deaths, they aren't regarded as a perfect solution either.

One recent study by a researcher at Oregon State University found that only one in five drivers used a rearview camera when it was available, but 88 percent of those who did avoided striking a child-sized decoy.

In its proposed rule, the NHTSA estimated that rearview video systems could substantially reduce fatal backing crashes ? by at least 95 a year ? and result in at least 7,000 fewer injuries.

Judy Neiman's 2006 Cadillac Escalade didn't have any cameras installed. They weren't added as an optional package until the following model year. Instead, her vehicle was equipped with a "rear parking assist system" ? bumper sensors, an alarm and lights that are supposed to go off within five feet of objects or people.

Neither Neiman nor the 10-year-old neighbor boy who had accompanied her and her daughter to the bank on Dec. 8, 2011, would recall hearing any alert, according to a police report.

Sydnee was carrying her purple plastic piggy bank and account book, so she could deposit $5 from her weekly allowance. After the transaction, Neiman slid behind the wheel and waited for the children. She heard the door slam, then saw the boy sitting on the right side of the back seat as she put the car into reverse.

She figured Sydnee was seated behind the driver's seat. Instead, the boy had gotten in first, telling Sydnee to go around and get in from the left side. He would later tell a police investigator that the girl had dropped her piggy bank on her way around the SUV.

Even if she were upright, at 4-feet-3-inches tall, Sydnee would have been practically invisible through the rear window, the bottom edge of which was a few inches taller than she was.

As the first anniversary of her daughter's death passed, Neiman hoped that sharing her story might spare other parents from enduring the pain she feels every day.

She tortures herself by replaying a conversation she had with Sydnee the summer before she died. Her daughter always had taken her heart condition, a congenital defect, in stride. She never complained or showed fear, despite her many surgeries.

Then one night Sydnee started crying, and she wouldn't tell her mother what was troubling her until the next morning.

"She said, 'I don't want to die, Mom,' and when she died, that's all I could think about. She didn't want to die," Neiman says. "She survived four open heart surgeries. If God had taken her at that time, I could accept it. But who could take her with her being hit by my car? And my hitting her?"

The Worst Cads of 2012

2012 was a banner year for scumbags and skanks, making our task of curating the most deplorable for our annual round-up of bad behavior a breeze. So come all ye readers, and delight in our slideshow of meticulously selected cads.

This year we have golden boys that fell from grace, the ever-present lying, cheating politicians, and Internet louts, not to mention the disgraced and humiliated in the wide world of sports. May this refresher serve you well as you cozy up to your family this holiday season and think how truly blessed you are that some mistress isn?t stalking you and that your cousin isn?t Violentacrez (whew). Oh, and if we missed anyone, please let us know in the comments. Some years, there are just too many cads to keep track!

Kristen Stewart and Rupert Sanders

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson may be back together, but we can?t just forgive and forget. This past summer, US Weekly published photos of the Twilight starlet cheating on her boyfriend and co-star with her married director, Rupert Sanders. All hell broke loose. Stewart tried to contain the Twihard outrage with numerous public apologies, while Sanders, father of two, pretty much slipped under the rage radar. They both make our list?for causing so many tween tears and for ruining the K-Stew/R-Patz fantasy.

Remember in 2009 when Chris Brown assaulted his girlfriend Rihanna, and the world gasped collectively at the leaked images of Rihanna?s injured face? Well Brown hasn?t exactly been on an apology tour since then. Three weeks ago, he tweeted to comedian Jenny Johnson: ?take them teeth out when u Sucking my dick HOE.? More from Twitter: Rihanna?s recent tweets indicate the two are back together. They also collaborated on a song called, ?Ain?t Nobody?s Business,? though their saga continues to be everybody?s.

Violentacrez aka Michael Brutsch

Known as the ?Biggest Troll on the Web,? Reddit user Violentacrez became Internet-famous for creating Jailbait, a section of the popular social news site where users posted images of underaged girls. He was also the brainchild behind Creepshots?another ?sub-reddit,? which collected close-ups of women?s breasts and butts, covertly shot in public?and just generally spent a ton of time on Reddit for the sole purpose of pissing people off with racist, anti-Semitic, and sexist comments. We thought he might hit the road after Gawker?s Adrian Chen exposed his identity as the perverted yet oddly vanilla Michael Brutsch, but his recently fired self still roams Reddit to collect donations for his plight and defend himself. Oh, and he?s looking for a new job in the porn industry.

Joining the rather sizable club of hypocritical politicians this year was Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.): His sordid past, which came to light during his 2012 campaign, includes (to name a few) several extramarital relationships with his patients when he was a physician, allegedly exhibiting ?violent and threatening behavior? toward his ex-wife, and claiming an anti-abortion stance while asking his mistress to get an abortion after he knocked her up. Perhaps the most depressing part of this story? He won re-election.

While Rush Limbaugh spews a lot of dirtbag-level junk, he hit a particular nerve in February with his comments about Sandra Fluke, calling her a ?slut? and ?prostitute? for appearing before the House to gain support for contraceptive coverage. Or, as Jezebel wrote, ?The talking butthole that replaced Rush Limbaugh's face decades ago is making sounds again.? Despite the growing criticism across party lines, Limbaugh continued to antagonize Fluke until he finally offered an elliptical, faux-apology months later, only to retract it after learning Fluke was being considered for Time?s person of the year.

Lance Armstrong could be (and has been!) called many things. We decided ?cad? should be one of them for?as a colleague put it??tricking a nation that was in love with him.? Once a hero of sports and life, gaining the admiration and wrists of millions for his post-cancer Tour de France triumph, U.S. News named Armstrong one of their top 10 losers in 2012 after he was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for doping. ?We cheered for the young man who gave us a best-case scenario of what life might be after cancer,? wrote Elaine Schattner for the Atlantic. ?His influence was pervasive, and that's why it matters so much that he misled millions.?

The Generals: David Petraeus, John Allen, Jeffrey Sinclair

To speak in generous terms, the military did not have a great PR year: The documentary The Invisible War detailed the military?s rape problem as allegations of sexual assault continued to make headlines. Then came the Petraeus scandal that would not quit. While we?ve included Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair in our trio, his alleged actions rise way above cad-level, featuring charges of raping his subordinate officers, forcible sodomy, and threatening women who refused to have sex with him. But as far as we know (it?s all still such a warped, tangled mess), David Petraeus, the now ex-director of the CIA who had an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell, and Gen. John Allen, who seemed to have a rather unusual email relationship with the married Jill Kelley, hit the mark.

After getting fired from the University of Arkansas, football coach Bobby Petrino recently landed a job at Western Kentucky University. Congratulations, Bobby! It?s a tough job market, you know, especially for someone who got himself sacked for having an affair with a former Arkansas student. Not content to just sleep with Jessica Dorrell, Petrino also hired her as a student-athlete development coordinator, and gave her a wad of cash totaling $20,000 for Christmas. The whole affair came to light after Petrino got into a motorcycle accident with Dorrell in tow, and then lied and said he was riding alone. Classy all around.

We hesitate to even put Hunter Moore on our list, because Hunter Moore exists for attention. Moore?s claim to fame is the now shuttered ?revenge porn? website, Is Anyone Up?, where scorned lovers could post naked photos of their exes. After blessedly going away for a time, he is now back, promising a new site with much of his old formula, plus a stalker-friendly mapping feature with the addresses of his personal enemies. Salon interviewed him and was somewhat disappointed: ?There was nothing shocking about his?talk of ?gross, green vaginas? or his admitted lack of morals?at one point I actually caught myself yawning,? wrote Tracy Clark-Flory. May we forget him by this time next year.

The Sex Tape Scandal of the Year goes to pro wrestling legend Hulk Hogan. The video, made six years ago, surfaced a few month back on Gawker and is of Hogan and the wife (now ex-wife, Heather Clem) of his former friend, Bubba the Love Sponge, who supposedly encouraged the two to get it on. (Bubba: Also a cad.) According to Hogan, his wife at the time, Linda, also wanted him to sleep with Clem. Linda tells a different story. In an interview with Access Hollywood, she said she was hurt and shocked by the news of the sex tape. So, lesson here on what not to do if a sex tape of you cheating on your wife becomes public: blame your wife for coercing you to have sex with another woman. It is highly unlikely people will take your side. I have not heard a soul say, ?Team Hogan.?

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has made some mistakes. He slept with a woman, Louise Neathway, who wasn?t his wife. She then blackmailed him by threatening to go public with their affair if he didn?t divorce his wife. Neathway is now charged with harassing Cashman?s wife and his other ex-mistresses. She also asked him for money, allegedly saying she needed it to ?to fund medical treatment after an aborted pregnancy prosecutors say never happened.? Cashman?s wife filed for divorce in February and Neathway awaits trial. If Fatal Attraction had not already been made, perhaps Cashman could sell his story. Instead, he?ll have to settle for making our list.

Introducing: Alyssa Botelho

This is a series of Q&As with new, young and up-and-coming science, health and environmental writers and reporters. They ? at least some of them ? have recently hatched in the Incubators (science writing programs at schools of journalism), have even more recently fledged (graduated), and are now making their mark as wonderful new voices explaining science to the public.

Today we introduce you to Alyssa Botelho (Twitter).

Hello, welcome to The SA Incubator. Let?s start from the beginning: where are you originally from?

I?m from a small college town in North Carolina called Davidson. Three years ago, I migrated north for college. I?m now in my last year at Harvard, where I study molecular biology and history of science.

How did you get into science and how did you get into writing? And how did these two trajectories fuse into becoming a science writer?

I?ve always felt an internal kick to get to the bottom of things. It was the feeling that drew me to science when I was old enough to read, and sparked a fascination of biology?how and why we work the way we do?when I hit high school. I come from a family of classical musicians, and trained in ballet for fifteen years. So when I was little, I lived a sort of double life: that of a young scientist and a ballet dancer.

It was because I missed ballet that I discovered journalism. I was in my first year of college?training three or four hours a week in the dance studio instead of thirty?and frustrated. A friend pushed me to join the Arts section of the college paper. I would get free tickets to watch Boston Ballet if I wrote reviews. So I joined. And that?s how my parallel educations in the biochemistry lab and the newsroom of The Harvard Crimson began.

In the lab, I learned that doing science means being comfortable in a constant state of not knowing enough?of trying to distill details, getting the big picture, judging competing interpretations of data, and worrying, ?Is this true?? It is a way of working that I discovered as a scientist?and fell in love with as a reporter.

What professional experience you have had so far?publications, internships, jobs? Feel free to include a bunch of links here! What is your current job?

After working as an arts writer for two years at the Crimson, I transitioned to hard news and science journalism. This December, I finished a year-long run as a general news and science editor at the paper. Two classmates and I directed the paper?s bi-weekly science section together.

In 2011 I worked at the Nieman Foundation, where I had the chance to write about a number of leading global health journalists. Last summer I worked as a science and health reporting intern at The Washington Post. Next summer, I?ll be a reporting intern at The Boston Globe. For now, I?m focused on writing my thesis, and graduating.

How do you see the current and future science media ecosystem, how it differs from the past, and what role will new, young science communicators like yourself play in building it and making it the best it can be?

Scientists tell us new stories about our world by meticulously collecting and weaving together bits of hard-earned data. A Post journalist once told me that this work, in essence, is evidence-based reporting. From the storytellers of the laboratory, I believe, comes a model for sharper, more rigorous news reporting. Science writers can lead the way.

With every new app and interface comes the opportunity to make this evidence-based reporting more vivid and more democratic. But no matter how the facts are presented?through photos, videos, data visualization, 140 characters or 14,000?the standard for accurate reporting and tightly crafted narrative will remain the same. It is a daunting task: to do more, and faster, without sacrificing the principles. I?m eager to learn, and join in the challenge.

What is the favorite story you?ve written?

Last spring, I had a chance to interview E.O. Wilson for a story about his newest book, The Social Conquest of Earth. In the process, I was able to speak with James Watson and Richard Lewontin. These three biologists are starkly different thinkers?but all are avid writers. Hearing their stories was an honor. That week of reporting is one of my favorite college memories.

I also had great fun reporting on AIDS vaccine research for the Post and writing about a mysterious sleep disorder in the blind for the Globe.

Do you write a personal or science blog? How much do you use social media networks, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Tumblr, Pinterest, Flickr, YouTube etc., to promote your own and your friends? work, to learn and to connect?

Last summer I sat across from the prolific Post reporter Joel Achenbach, who started blogging in 2005. (Achenblog was around even before blogs were cool.) He inspired me to give it a try, so I?m blogging this year at www.alyssabotelho.com as a sort of senior project. There you can find my clips, a stream of posts, and updates on my thesis research. I?m writing about a battle in 1976 over the construction of a lab at Harvard dedicated to work with recombinant DNA. The technology, which allows scientists to swap genes between organisms, is now commonplace. But in the 1970s, recombinant DNA drew sharp divides around the country?and among Harvard?s own biologists. In my thesis, I?m trying to piece together a local history of the recombinant DNA fight in Cambridge. It?s turning out to be a rather amazing tale about the rise of biotechnology in counterculture-era America.

I keep track of science-y happenings through Twitter, the blogosphere, and word-of-laboratory. But I tune into the radio and read a newspaper whenever I can.

Thank you!

Thank you so much.
