Home-Buying Advice For Single Women ? CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - From high heels to homeowners, single women are making their mark in the real estate game. A recent study found that single women now outnumber single men two-to-one in home-buying. But, before you jump into the market, there are some things that women should look out for when buying a house.

Maria Moros is tired of paying rent and looking to buy her first place in Uptown Dallas. ?I?ve been in Dallas a year, and I look at how much I?ve paid in rent,? she said. ?It?s overwhelming.? At 25 years old and single, this career woman is not letting anything stop her from making the huge purchase of a home.

?Single women make up 25 percent of our business,? said Junior Desinore of Level Properties. ?I think women are getting higher paying jobs, better degrees, and they?re not relying on men to buy real estate like they used to.?

Desinore said that security is the top priority for most women homebuyers. He recommends that women look at the door jamb for signs that a home is safe. ?The door jamb is going to let you know if the property has been damaged, repaired, and also if it?s been broken into,? Desinore said. He also advises that women use caution when buying older homes.

Women ? and all homebuyers, really ? should be aware of how much maintenance a house might require. ?The first thing we do,? Desinore said, ?is open the cabinets and look at the plumbing. We look at the electric. One of the key features to look at in an older house is the windows.? And while a beautiful yard might be a selling point, maintaining that elaborate landscaping all by yourself could be a challenge. Homebuyers need to consider all of these costs ? lawn service, repairs and upgrades ? when making their decision. ?With an older house, there is going to be a lot more maintenance than with new construction.?

There are other things that homebuyers can do before committing to a home. Pull up the crime statistics for the neighborhood. Check out the school district, even if you do not have children. Look for any upcoming construction projects in the area. These are all factors that could impact the resale value of a home.

Moros has not made up her mind yet, but she said that she will know her home when she sees it. ?It?s a feeling you get when you walk in and, you?re like, I?m home,? she said.
