?Facebook has shown off its new Android toy - called "Home", which the company says is not a new OS for smartphones but is more than just a mobile app.
Once loaded into the handset, the home screen is replaced by Facebook's own "Cover feed" that contains updates from the users Facebook friends.
Another function is known as "chat heads" that ties other mobile apps and messaging platforms into the Facebook service.
Since SMS is integrated into Facebook Messenger for Android, chat heads include Facebook messages as well as texts.
The new software will be available as a free download from the Google Play Store starting April 12 and is currently designed to work on the HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy Note II. It will also work on the forthcoming HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, and on more devices in the coming months.
Facebook's "Home" will also be available pre-installed on phones through the Facebook Home Program. HTC and AT&T are the first companies working together to deliver a phone with Home. It's called the HTC First and it goes on sale April 12.
